Other informationKNEE PROBLEMS
She has experienced problems with both her knees since late 2016. The condition started in her right knee. "There's a constant build-up of fluid in my knee. I had to keep challenging myself during training and try to overcome my injury. Injury is my biggest enemy. Sometimes it hurts so much I can't even go down the stairs. No matter how much warm-up I do, how much physiotherapy I put myself through, it still hurts constantly. The doctors even advised me to just be on bed rest and take the weight off my knees for three months to recover. But that's not an option for me, at least not now [ahead of the 2018 Olympic Winter Games]. It can be frustrating, especially since it's chronic. You feel like it's something you have no control over and just can't beat. But injury is not a scary thing. I've been turning to self-motivational books, as well as the stories of other Olympic athletes to spur myself on to overcome this injury." (OIS, 07 Feb 2018)

NATIONAL FIRST
Her victory in the 1000m at the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi was the People's Republic of China's first Olympic gold medal in speed skating. "I'm so glad to win. It was a great achievement for me." (SportsDeskOnline, 11 Jun 2015; isu.org, 13 Feb 2014)

AUTHOR
She has written a book about winter sports that has been published in the People's Republic of China. "The book tells everyone about my sport - the history, the technology and the competitions. In addition to written text, there are also a lot of pictures and illustrations. It is intended for both children and adults." (schaatsen.nl, 13 Jul 2017)
