When and where did you begin this sport? | She began skating at about age 11 in the Netherlands. She initially competed in short track before later taking up speed skating.
Club / Team | Team Afterpay: Netherlands
Reason for choosing this sport | Her father introduced her to skating. She decided to take up speed skating in order to improve her physique for short track.
Name of coach | Martin ten Hove [club], NED; Erwin ten Hove [club], NED |
Nicknames | Joris (schaasten.nl, 20 Nov 2012)
Hero / Idol | Dutch hockey player Wietske de Ruiter. (sporttop.nl, 08 Sep 2009)
Other sports | She competed in both speed skating and short track at the Olympic Winter Games in 2014 and 2018. (Pyeongchang Entries, 14 Feb 2018; SportsDeskOnline, 22 Feb 2014)
Awards and honours | She was the female recipient of the Ard Schenk Award in 2016 and 2018 as the best speed skater in the Netherlands. (schaatsen.nl, 20 Mar 2018, 15 Mar 2016) She was flag bearer for the Netherlands at the opening ceremony of the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi. (ONS, 07 Feb 2014) In 2008 she received the Short Track Talent Award from the Royal Dutch Skating Association [KNSB]. (jorientermors.nl, 01 Dec 2011) |

Other information | PSYCHOLOGIST She has sought the assistance of a psychologist to help her overcome setbacks and gain perspective on her life and career. "Unfortunately, I have often had big setbacks. But that's just how my career has gone. In the end we are talking 'only' about top sport. I have experienced enough outside of skating, so that I can put bad results into perspective. I realise that life isn't all about medals. I have been working with a psychologist for many years [speaking in 2021], but the way in which that happens now is very different from the past. It is confrontational and requires you to be very honest with yourself. At least, if you're striving for change. It's not always fun to look at yourself in the mirror. I'll do it, because I know that I can compete better on the ice." (nu.nl, 23 Oct 2021; schaatsen.nl, 11 Sep 2021) UNEXPECTED MEDAL She was a member of the Dutch women's short track 3000m relay team that won a bronze medal at the 2018 Olympic Winter Games in Pyeongchang despite not qualifying for the A final. Two out of four teams in the A final were disqualified, meaning the Dutch team - who won the B final in a world record time - were presented with the bronze medal. (deadspin.com, 21 Feb 2018; bbc.com, 20 Feb 2018) OTHER ACTIVITIES In October 2018 she launched her own line of jewellery called 'van Jorien'. (schaatsen.nl, 10 Jan 2019) |
|
Sporting philosophy / motto | "Combining different disciplines makes you stronger. That is what I believe in." (espn.go.com, 14 Jan 2014)
Injuries | An ankle injury forced her to miss some of the 2020 National Championships in the Netherlands. (schaatsen.nl, 28 Nov 2020) She underwent a knee operation in October 2018. She was out of action for nine months but says it took her three years to fully recover from the injury. "At first it was all about what I could do to the maximum until the knee no longer worked. It was working around the pain. Now I am no longer concerned with surviving, but with improving." (nrc.nl, 29 Oct 2021; trouw.nl, 21 Nov 2020, 01 Nov 2019; schaatsen.nl, 10 Jan 2019) A back injury meant she missed the 2017 World Cup event in Stavanger, Norway. (nrc.nl, 15 Nov 2017) |
|
Hobbies | Motorbikes, cars. (schaatsen.nl, 10 Jan 2019)
Milestones | She became the first female athlete to win medals in two different sports at the same edition of the Olympic Winter Games when she claimed bronze in short track and gold in speed skating at the 2018 Games in Pyeongchang. At the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi she had become the first female athlete to compete in both short track and speed skating at the same edition of the Olympic Winter Games. (SportsDeskOnline, 12 Nov 2021; schaatsen.nl, 12 Jun 2018, 20 Mar 2018; sports.yahoo.com, 20 Feb 2018; usatoday.com, 20 Feb 2018; nu.nl, 18 Sep 2017; ONS, 16 Feb 2014)
