Sport Specific Information
When and where did you begin this sport? He began skating at age 12 in Melbourne after wanting to play ice hockey. He also followed in his mother Yvonne Hay's footsteps, as he also took up figure skating in order to learn the technical aspects of skating.
Why this sport? "It was just something different. It felt pretty physical and it was pretty tough and that's what I liked about it and once I eventually started doing some racing when I was a junior, it was really fun."

Other information EARLY INSPIRATION
His Olympic dream was inspired by Steven Bradbury's success at the 2002 Olympic Winter Games in Salt Lake City, where he secured Australia's first ever gold medal at a Winter Games in the 1000m short track event. "When I saw Steven Bradbury win his gold I decided there was more than just Sunday football on the weekend. I wanted that glory of being an Olympian and wanted to give it my all. A coach of mine made me look in the mirror one day and say to my self, 'I want to be an Olympian, I'm going to be an Olympian'. Four years later I achieved that in 2006, in Torino."
