Following the 2018 Olympic Winter Games in Pyeongchang he questioned his desire to continue in the sport, but was motivated to continue by the appointment of Eric Bedard as a national coach. "I was asking myself a lot of questions [in mid-2018]. Do I still love skating? Do I want to continue? I am Olympic champion, a gold medallist, so have I achieved all that I wanted to? Sure, I still have potential, but mentally am I ready to sacrifice what I want to do [outside of sport] because I have a chance of further success? It took one session with Bedard to decide. He came in hard, and we were left sore and burning afterwards. But I said, 'OK, this is why I love skating'. It gave me the kick I needed. That's why I want to continue, and I'm ready to go for another four years, to work together to be even better." (, 20 Sep 2018)

At the 2018 Olympic Winter Games in Pyeongchang he and his partner Kasandra Bradette both represented Canada in short track. The couple say their relationship helps one another overcome obstacles in their skating careers. "We met skating in Montreal. She [Kasandra] lived about an hour away from my old town and we met in Montreal. She was in the team and I joined it. If things go wrong for one of us [on the ice], then we can support each other. We are able to encourage each other, to help each other refocus and to turn the page, leaving emotions aside."
