Reason for choosing this sportShe was inspired to begin speed skating after watching the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver. "I saw girls I used to compete against during my years as an inline skater who were now competing in the Olympics in speed skating on ice."

She competed in inline skating as a child but her parents banned her from skating at age 14 as a result of what Schwartzenburg describes as "bad decisions" on her part. Seven years later she was inspired to take up speed skating after watching the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver, and was provided a second chance by her grandmother who offered to move with her to Salt Lake City, UT, United States of America. "She said, 'would you be willing to stop getting into trouble and leave all your friends and family behind to skate again?' Of course I said yes." (Healthy Living Magazine, 29 Jan 2016)
