Famous relatives | His younger sister, Vilde Baas, also competes in speed skating. She has competed at national level in Norway. (fvn.no, 18 Mar 2019; speedskatingresults.com, 01 Jan 2020) |
Reason for choosing this sport | His family lived near the Dolemo Idrettslag club, so he and his younger sister Vilde would regularly skate there under the guidance of their father Eivind Baas who was their first coach. He also took part in cycling, until he decided to focus solely on speed skating. "In January 2017 I decided to focus on skating, as I realised it would be impossible to reach 'the top' in both sports. The main reason I chose skating rather than cycling is that the training is so varied. As an ice skater, in my opinion, you are very versatile, especially in the training work." |
Most influential person in career | His father, Eivind Baas, who was his first coach. (fvn.no, 18 Mar 2019)
Ambitions | To regularly compete at major international events. (fvn.no, 22 Nov 2019) |
Name of coach | Wouter Olde Heuvel [Team Sormarka], NED
When and where did you begin this sport? | He began ice skating as a boy, and took up speed skating at age 11 at the Dolemo Idrettslag club in Dolemo, Norway. |
Sporting philosophy / motto | "I set some goals before each season, which some may think are unrealistic, but one should never be too sure of reaching their goals." (fvn.no, 22 Nov 2019)
Other information | MOVE TO STAVANGER In 2019 he moved from Dolemo to Stavanger to train with a new team, Team Sormarka. He continues to compete for his old club, Dolemo Idrettslag, but says that living in Stavanger allows for more ice time which he hopes will improve his training. "In Stavanger I get to go on the ice a whole month earlier than before. This is because there is an indoor hall versus the outdoor ice in Dolemo. I also get to train with more people at my level, which makes it faster, and also makes it easier to do longer sessions, because I can draft behind and not always be out in front."
