General Interest
InjuriesIn late 2022 he suffered a broken big toe after he dropped a weight on his foot during training. He was forced to miss the World Cup events in Stavanger, Norway, and Heerenveen, Netherlands, in November that year. (schaatsen.nl, 11 Dec 2022; telegraaf.nl, 17 Nov 2022; skatenl.nl, 24 Nov 2022)

In July 2019 he sustained a broken fibula in his left leg during football training. He missed five months of skating training. (skatenl.nl, 24 Nov 2022; ewmagazine.nl, 23 Nov 2021)

Other sportsHe has competed in roller speed skating at national level in the Netherlands, and won the Dutch men's 100m title in 2022. He also played football at youth level for the FC Twente and PEC Zwolle clubs in the Netherlands. (skatenl.nl, 24 Nov 2022; schaatsen.nl, 26 Jun 2022)

Reason for choosing this sportHe played football alongside speed skating until age 17 before giving up football to focus on skating. "In the end the other players at [Dutch clubs] FC Twente and PEC Zwolle were all a bit more technical and I was just not good enough. If I could have chosen football and played at Twente, then I might have done that. I really like team sports, I am a real team player, and I miss that every now and then. Of course, as a skater I am also in a team, but in the end you have to do it yourself. Everyone cheering when you score a goal is fantastic. You all win and you all lose in football. In an individual sport, you lose on your own and win on your own."
