Reason for choosing this sportShe was noticed by the owner of a local roller rink, who encouraged her to try inline skating. "I liked to skate fast. I really liked to skate. I just really enjoyed it and stuck with it and eventually started getting good at it." Her mother later encouraged her to switch to speed skating on ice so she would have the chance to compete at the Olympic Winter Games. "I didn't really want to ice skate. I really loved inline skating, and ice skating, it's cold. And it was just something new, and I already knew I really liked inline skating. So inline skating has always been my passion. It still is my number one passion. It's just not in the Olympics."

Other informationSWITCHING TO ICE
She began her career as an inline skater before taking up short track in 2018 with the aim of competing at the Olympic Winter Games. She combined both disciplines until 2020 when she started to focus on ice. "Transitioning to ice was not easy. Short track was hard for a couple of years. I needed to get my technique down and fix some bad habits on the ice. But like inline, short track is very aggressive and anything can happen. I enjoy the adrenaline rush but I think I'm quite calm, and that helps me. A lot of skaters get nervous, so one of my good qualities is that I can control it and pull off a good performance under pressure." (isu.org, 26 Oct 2022; seattletimes.com, 22 Jan 2022)
